About

AlmostfreeNYC is a blog intended to introduce budget friendly events and activities to readers who want to enjoy the city without burning a hole in their pocket.  NYC is overflowing with things to do, but the purpose of almostfreeNYC is to provide city seekers with exciting and low cost things to do, see, eat, and enjoy.

I’m currently a senior at Central Connecticut State University. As a journalism minor, one of my requirements was to choose a topic and create a blog showcasing the stories and information I’ve collected relating to the topic. I chose almostfreeNYC because it includes two of my favorite things; NYC and saving money. I’m in NYC on the weekends and have lots of places, events, and experiences I want to report on and share with readers looking for things to do while staying on a budget.  The class is over now, but I’m continuing the blog because I’ve enjoyed it so much.

Thanks for checking out my blog and I encourage you to try some of these low cost things to do next time you visit the city!

  1. NYC is most definitely full of interesting things to do on a budget… they’re just buried underneath a mountain of expensive touristy garbage. I’m always planning my next weekend outing, so I’ll be keeping an eye on your blog for suggestions.

  2. Hey, this is a great idea! Thank for doing this! Will definitely follow you as we would love to travel to New York City with the kiddies one day soon and knowing how to do stuff which is awesome but not too expensive will definitely be appreciated!

  3. Oh I like your blog idea very much! I tell my friends there are lots of things to do for free in NYC but they don’t believe me till they come! Anyways not sure if you wrote about it yet or not but if you haven’t checked out Cloisters yet you may want to it is also a suggested ticket price and has several parts ms near by for lounging or picnics. Hope that helps! I posted photos awhile ago on my blog if interested! Great career choice by the way I was a journalist in the Navy and loved it very much!

      1. Hey – thanks for the follow, and your blog is awesome! Any suggestions for events for youth and kids – budget friendly and free would be great. I am in a volunteer role and constantly searching for events and you would be a great resource! 😄

  4. Wow! So I was going to send you a link to the post I made about Cloisters and it seems that post never got published. Which is strange because I have all the photos in my archive but no story. Anyways, you should definitely go and maybe if you get a chance I would recommend maybe another week to two so that the trees have hit their peaks for fall since cloisters is on the Hudson and very beautiful this time of year. Also make sure you check out the tiny cafe for a rest if you get over whelmed in there! And as always have fun!

  5. I have been to NY numerous times to visit my family, but this is the first time I am going solo without family and just visit a great friend and contributor of Sweetie Surprise. This will be great reading material for my trip down. I am hoping to find some great items for the blog while I am there! Thank you!

    1. hmmm gift ideas..have you heard of MUJI? There’s a few of their stores in the city and they have some really nice quality stuff for a reasonable price. It’s mostly really practical things (like home and office stuff), so there might be some good gift ideas for those who appreciate the practical stuff 😉

  7. I’ll have to remember your blog when I finally make it to NY! Yep, I’ve travelled the world, but never set foot in New York! I owe it a visit, since now I live not too far off.

  8. Hi
Thanks for liking my blog post. Love your idea and nice to see journalism still exists as a subject in a world of self made journalists otherwise known as bloggers.

As a Brooklyn boy I choose dirty water dogs and a single slice of real pizza as the beat cheap eats in NYC. I also recommend strolling through the ethnic neighborhoods of Queens as a cheap attraction that tourists often miss. Have you ever taken one of those tours that take people eating in the different areas? Cheap and cool. And can you please mail me aone real pastrami ? What the hell will I do on Asia with no Jewish Delis?

  11. Good Luck in your studies. I used to live in NYC in the 1960’s. Big changes since then.
I’ve gotten away from crowds these days. But I can understand the draw of any city.
    Thanks for stopping by.

While it isn’t free, a unique visit to Bil Baird’s puppet theater might be a treat for you. While his children run the place now (I think) – it was his puppets that were in the movie The Sound of Music.

      1. I remember having a back stage tour when I was young. I’m sure things have changed just a bit since the 1960’s.
I hope you get to visit and enjoy. There used to be a restaurant across the street, but it’s been turned into condos. Another good place to visit that has also changed is the South Street Seaport museum. When they first opened they only had one or two ships at the pier now it is quite a space:

  12. Hey, there. I just wanted to thank you for liking my site, ‘The Traveler’s Guide, to life or anywhere.’ It’s my first post and I had three people like it today – amazing. Your site is INCREDIBLE!!! I’ve never been down into NYC, only the north end of Long Island on a bike tour through New England. If I ever go, I’ll be checking your listings. Absolutely beautiful site. Thanks, for all your effort. Cheers, Barbara Jean Hollywood.

  13. Hi I just read that you are attending CCSC! Wow, New Britain, CT. I lived there twice, once in 1968 and then again about 1997. Best place to get steamed cheeseburgers and Capitol Lunch hot dogs. I lived in Avon for years and then moved to NYC. I have some posts in my blog about things to do in NYC. I like your niche. I’ve been considering writing another blog which would focus on NYC but not with a particular bent – maybe some emphasis on real estate since I’m a broker. I love the history here and the architecture and the ethnic food.

    1. That’s so funny, I grew up in Avon! Small world. You should definitely do a NYC blog, there’s an endless amount of stuff to write about, including a ton of real estate stories 🙂

  15. Great idea! Good luck in your studies. I went to Central for Accounting a number of years back. Being this close to NYC is great. You can take the train in and enjoy the weekend shopping, eating, going to events. It’s great!
