If you’re still not in the Christmas spirit, just step into the neighborhood of Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.
Every December over 100,000 people from all over the world, come to see the over-the-top Christmas lights of Dyker Heights. Whether you think excessive Christmas decorations are festive or tacky, Dyker Heights is still a must-see for the whole family.
The Dyker Heights Christmas lights have been a tradition since 1986 and have become progressively more extravagant and excessive each year. Most houses get their lights and decorations done professionally, with the intention to outdo the house next door.
You think your electricity bill is high? Rumor has it that some home owners are spending up to $10,000 on their electricity bills in the month of December due to the decorations.
Dyker Heights is completely free, but be sure to plan your visit between 5 and 9pm until Dec 31st. The lights go from 11th Avenue to 13th Avenue and from 83rd to 86th Street in Brooklyn.
Tip: 83rd and 84th Streets between 11th and 12th Avenues have (arguably) the best decorations/lights of the neighborhood.
Check out this video from a recent visitor (It’s a little jumpy, but it captures how seriously Dyker Heights takes their Christmas decorations).
Wow! These look absolutely stunning! I will make sure to get myself to Brooklyn to check them out! Thank you!

It’s my favorite time of year! I live a few avenues over in Bay Ridge. My next post will be pics of Bay Ridge and Dyker holiday lights 🙂 You answered my question – I have always wondered how much their electric bill is.

I can see what you mean about serious Christmas displays. I am sure they give many people pleasure but I am not sure about the ethics of getting professionals to do the decorations. I thought the whole point of extravagant Christmas displays was to give the home owners an opportunity to go wild with their imaginations and creativity whilst being full of the Christmas spirit.

Heehee – a trip back in time! Newly married in 1963 my bride and I lived on 84th street between 11th and 12th Avenue. Her parents were on 85th street between 13th and 14th!
Thanks for the memories! Regards

We have similar traditions in Australia. For the ultimate el-cheapo to do in Sydney, go up the southern pylon of the Harbor bridge. You get.the same view but pay a fraction of the bridge climbers.
