Although some consider the Laurie Beechman Theatre to be one of New York’s best kept secrets, the theatre has staged the works of dozens of legendary playwrights and entertainers including Joan Rivers, Bruce Willis, Lewis Black, Tennessee Williams, Howard Stern, and many more.
Because the theatre is located in the basement of West Bank Cafe at 407 W. 42nd Street, theatre goers have to walk through the restaurant of customers chomping on their steak frites and crab cakes. Once you reach the entrance to the theatre, the atmosphere changes entirely with the small, but cozy cabaret setup of the space, which seats up to 100.
The theatre offers events nightly which include singers, comedians, and performance artists, as well as burlesque and drag shows. Currently, among many other shows, the theatre is hosting Distorted Diznee, a cult favorite described as a “75-minute non-stop extravaganza featuring high-energy dance numbers, comedy, dazzling costumes and lip-syncing “ladies”– with a bit of Cher, Patti LuPone, Idina Menzel and Rihanna thrown in for good measure!” Needless to say, the show was well worth the visit.
Most events at the Laurie Beechman Theatre range from $5-25 with a $15 food/drink minimum, which is well under any broadway or off-broadway show in the city.
